In this imaginative new activity book, Marion Deuchars makes learning about art fun. Young readers are introduced to more than thirty great artists, then encouraged to try out the techniques that lie behind their greatest works.

Short and accessible facts about each artist's life and works are followed by creative projects that Marion has devised based on the artist's particular techniques.

Take your pencil for a walk in the spirit of Paul Klee, experiment with color like Joan Miró, or create your own surrealist-inspired artwork.

  • Deuchars is a British designer who has taken children seriously, explaining in very simple terms and hands-on experience some iconing techniques of modern artists such as Miro, Picasso or Calatrava. By doing so she has enabled kids to produce strikingly powerful and accomplished visual pieces themselves. Her books have different levels of complexity though, some being for 5-6 and others for 8 and up all the way to young adults. We have bought editions of this book in English, Spanish and French as birthday presents becasuse parents have commented on how inspiring it has been to see our kids producing art that looks so accomplished.
On the one hand it is great to have an artist diary, constructed almos as a learning/experimenting log, and not as a coloring book. On another some of the techniques the book invits kids to experiment with would be better off in especial papers and not bound. One aspect to consider is that to take full advantage of this book, kids require to have access to a wide array of media. Although a begginer sample set of color pencils, water colors, tempera, etc would normally do, we did not have many of the specific materials before buying this book.
In conclusion a most definitly 2 thumbs up, with the warning however of expecting to be asked to use a wide variety of techniques to take full advantage of it.
  • Got this book as a gift for my son's third grade teacher. She is very into the arts and I thought this might be a great book not only for her personal use but also for art project ideas for the class. I flipped through the book before we gifted it to her and its so full of fun little activities! I was half tempted to do them before giving them to her, haha! Anyway, she really enjoyed the book!
  • Oh how I LOVE this book. I purchased this after I received a recommendation from a fellow homeschool mom. As an artist I am loving the book just as much as my kiddos are! One of the really neat things is that it isn't just for art. It has also encouraged learning about some different cultures, too.
  • I bought this book for my wife who is an artist and a preschool teacher. It's fun and inspiring to look through - a great source of ideas to introduce children (or anyone!) to art and get them involved.
  • The book does what it says it's going to do--dtaw and paint like the artists but it's a bit dull. I know a lot of art teachers and their techniques are more fun and still teach art. I was expecting more.
  • Great book for kids AND adults. Anyone interested in famous art & artist will find this interesting. Learn about famous artists’ techniques and how to apply these practices to your own artwork. It’s a nice “step-up” from the adult coloring books.
  • I like it. Got it for my grandson but realized he will have a hard time with it, so keeping it for myself. lol
  • I love this book. Deceptively simple instructions for creating art based on a few of the greats. Got a wonderful idea for simple monoprinting (thank you Marion Deuchars and Andy Warhol). For beginner and advanced artists alike.
